Department of Tamil Department of Tamil was established in 1923, Prof. Punnaivana Mudhaliar was the head of the Department. In 1957 Rev Fr. Rajamanickam S.J., joined the Department. During his 15 years of service M.A., Tamil was introduced in 1971. Fr.Micheal Irudhyam S.J. joined the Department. In 1973 Fr. Rajamanickam left for Loyola. His Place was taken by Rev. Dr. V.M Gnanaparkasam S.J., Soon he left the institution and his place was occupied by Dr. Kamtchinathan on a contract basis. Fr. Gnanapragasam returned and assumed office as head of the department.
Efficient teachers like Dr.K.P.Aravanan, Dr.Tamilavan, Dr.Rajgowtham, Dr.Valanarasu, Prof.R.C.Kumar, Dr.Mariaselvam, Dr.Kesavaraj, Dr.Balasubramania contributed towards the growth of the department with great dedication and sincerity. In 1981 the Department was recognised as a research centre by Madurai Kamaraj University. Fr.Gnanapragasam returned and assumed office as head of the department .He elevated the department to be research centre in Tamil. In 1987 M.Phill was started. When he retired Dr.Innachi was promoted head of the Dept. Soon Dr.Innachi left the institution to the Christian chair in Madras University. In 1984, Prof.Ponarasu became the head of the Department. He put in 27 years of dedicated service. After prof. Ponnarasu, Dr.S.Lordu became the head of the department.In his Period the department organised many national seminars. In 1988 Dr.Joseph Sundarajan became the head of the department. In 1955 Prof. P.Jeyaraman was appointed the head of the Dept. After his retirement Prof.N.Sivasubramanian became the head of the Department. He served as the editor of Tamil Research Magazine ‘Melum’. He organised many National Seminars. In 2003 Rev.Dr.Lourdusamy S.J., a member of the department, became the principal of the college. At that time B.A. Tamil was started in the self –financing stream. In 2023 Dr.M.Balaselvi works as a co-ordinator of Shift II Tamil students. Dr. Joseph Irudaya Xavier was promoted Head of the Department in 2006. He published 7 books. In 2012 Prof.Mony became the Head of the Department. After his retirement Dr.Franscis Xavier was promoted head of the Department in June 2016. All the 19 professors in the Department were obtained Ph.D degree and are pursing research, guiding research scholars.In the Year of 2021 Dr.A.C. Ignatius Xavier was the head of the Tamil Department. During his period we celebrated the 50th year of Anniversary of our Department. After his retirement. Dr.S.J.IDHAYARAJA was appointed as his head of the Department. He served the editor of interdicipilinary Research journal for Humanities and Reginiol co-ordinator- Reginal Unit(B10) Tamil(2017-2023). In the Department 28 professors are working. Among these people 20 professors had completed the PHD degree. 12 professors are persuing the research scholars. In every week for PG students ‘Viyazha vattam’ and ‘Thathuva pothakar tamil mandram’ for UG students are conducted. Every year 9 Endowment Lectures are also conducted. As like it such a National seminar and International seminars are also conducted. During 2013 – 2014 with the financial Assistance of CICT. We conducted 10 days workshop for Trainees. During 2014-2015 with the financial help of CICT We Conducted 3 days seminar also. Every year our Tamil department organised No of workshops and National seminars on different Topics. On the academic year 2023-24 we conducted the workshop on the Topic ‘Archealogy and Inscriptive study’ and National seminar on ‘Panmuga Nokkil Tamil Illakiyangal’.
By this academic year (2024-25) we are going to conduct National seminar on ‘Valviyal Nokkil Thirukural’ and workshop on ‘Thathuva sinthanaigal’. Besides our Tamil department calls the students from other colleges and conduct the various competitions on ‘Tamilam’ and ‘ Muthamil vizha’
During the centenary year of our college, Tamil Department Co-ordinated the ‘Alumni Tamil Students Mandram’. Every year Tamil department organise the Alumini Tamil students mandram. The curriculum of our Tamil Department helps to improve the personality development of our students to gain the employment opportunities. Besides these they can improve their skills and talents for to construct their life in a better way.
